How To See God

  • 28 April 2016

The Bible has some interesting things to say about the importance of God’s Word and how it relates to His personal presence with us.

Everyone wants to experience a deeper intimacy with God and feel a greater sense of His presence and be filled with more of His Spirit. And the Bible tells us that the main way that happens is through His Word, the Bible.

It is helpful to think of this in trinitarian categories - God’s word as a revelation of God, more specifically of Jesus Christ and, more specifically again, the Spirit of Christ.

Read your Bible!

This paper may fall into the hands of someone who "loves and believes the Bible, and yet reads it Only a little." I fear there are many such people in this day. It is a clay of hustle and hurry. It is a day of talking and committee meetings, and public work. These things are all very well in their way, but I fear that they sometimes clip and cut short the private reading of the Bible. Does your conscience tell you that you are one of the persons I speak of? Listen to me, and I will say a few things which deserve your serious attention.

We Need More Knowledge, Not Less

  • 27 August 2015

Knowledge should lead to worship. The true knowledge of God will result not in our being puffed up with conceit at how knowledgeable we are, but in our falling on our faces before God in sheer wonder and crying, “O the depths of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!” Whenever our knowledge becomes dry or leaves us cold, something has gone wrong. For whenever Christ opens the Scriptures to us and we learn from him, our heart should be aglow within us. The more we know God the more we should love him.

But do you love Him?

One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,
to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple.
(Psalm 27:4)

How Paul interpreted Jesus

Matt Perman:

“One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven and come, follow me” (Luke 18:22).

Is this something that God commands every Christian to do?

Many are puzzled by that question, because if we say “yes,” it immediately seems impractical. On the other hand, if we say “no,” we seem to be diminishing the force of Jesus’ command.

Living a Successful Life

  • 8 April 2015

What does it mean to successful?

That is a vital question for anyone to ask – one that determines a person’s priorities and direction in life.

Whether you are a pastor, an accountant, a school teacher, a stay-at-home mom, an office manager, a construction worker, an engineer, or any other occupation – if you are a believer in Jesus Christ – this question pertains to you. What does it mean to be successful?

What does true success look like, not in terms of getting a new promotion or a raise, but in the highest and loftiest sense of that word?

Why does God always demand praise?

  • 9 February 2015

In his book, Reflections on the Psalms (Chapter ix), C.S. Lewis outlines how he came to understand the necessity of praising God:

I had not noticed either that just as men spontaneously praise whatever they value, so they spontaneously urge us to join them in praising it: “Isn’t she lovely? Wasn’t it glorious? Don’t you think that magnificent?” The Psalmists in telling everyone to praise God are doing what all men do when they speak of what they care about.
