"You Christians are Hypocrites!"

Why you shouldn't reject Christianity because of hypocrites in the church:

i) The existence of Christian hypocrisy actually proves the Bible is true. If Christianity is true then we should expect Christian hyopcrisy to exist. The Bible fully acknowledges the existence of such people. There are numerous warnings directed to them and to the church to watch out for them. (Matthew 6:2, 5, 16; 7:5; 15:7; 22:18; 23:13, 15; 23:23, 25, 27, 29; 24:51; Mark 7:6; Luke 6:42; 12:56; and 13:15)

ii) Hypocrisy in the church is a practical problem, not a theological one. "If there are weeds in my garden, I have a problem. But it does not lead me to question the existence of lettuce." 1

iii) Hypocrisy is a Christian concept. Only Christianity offers the objective moral basis to condemn hypocrisy. Once you reject God, "everything is permitted". In a godless world, why not be a hypocrite?

iv) The existence of a counterfeit does not disprove the real thing. In fact, quite the opposite. Just like the existence of a counterfeit £10 note is evidence of the real thing, the mere existence of Christian hypocrites is evidence that there are genuine Christians.

v) Further, the existence of counterfeits proves the value of the real thing. People don't forge brown paper bags. They don't have enough value. Money is forged because it is valuable. Same with Christianity. Christian hypocrisy exists because genuine Christianity exists and we know it is a valuable thing.

vi) There are 2 ways of living - God's way or our way. You are on God's team or the other team. True Christians are on God's team. People who reject God are on the other team. But whose team are the hypocrites on? The other team of course. So, people who reject Christianity because of the hypocrites are actually already on the same side as the hypocrites.

vii) Churches are often in a no-win situation. Condemn hypocrites and those living contrary to God's design and we are accused of being self-righteousness and judgmental. Don't condemn them and we join the hypocrites in tolerating what the Bible forbids.

viii) Not all so-called hypocrisy IS hypocrisy. A Christian who sins is not necessarily a hypocrite. There is a difference between a humble, repentant sinner who acknowledges their need for forgiveness and the smug hypocrite who denies their sin and whose life is all for show. The church is a hospital for sinners, not a rest home for saints. "To reject Christ because the church has sin in it is like rejecting hospitals because they are full of sick people." 2

When I say, "I am a Christian"
I'm not shouting, "I’ve been saved!"
I'm whispering, "I get lost!
That's why I chose this way"
When I say, "I am a Christian"
I don't speak with human pride
I'm confessing that I stumble—
Needing God to be my guide
When I say, "I am a Christian"
I'm not trying to be strong
I'm professing that I'm weak
And pray for strength to carry on
When I say, "I am a Christian"
I'm not bragging of success
I'm admitting that I've failed
And cannot ever pay the debt
When I say, "I am a Christian"
I don't think I know it all
I submit to my confusion
Asking humbly to be taught
When I say, "I am a Christian"
I'm not claiming to be perfect
My flaws are all too visible
But God believes I'm worth it
When I say, "I am a Christian"
I still feel the sting of pain
I have my share of heartache,
Which is why I seek His name
When I say, "I am a Christian"
I do not wish to judge
I have no authority...
I only know I'm loved
